Holden Beach, North Carolina is one of four barrier islands that run east to west along the southern coast of North Carolina. Holden Beach was one of the earliest settled barrier islands, and was originally used primarily for agriculture and grazing of livestock. In the early 1900's a ferry was used to transport the original fishermen and sun worshipers to the island, and some of these adventurers built ground level cottages, a few of which have survived and are still in use. In the 1960's the Army Corps of Engineers built a modern, sky-high bridge to connect Holden Beach to the mainland, and more modern beach cottages were constructed. Because of careful planning, Holden Beach has never become a commercialized beach area. Aside from a general store, a fishing pier, a couple of restaurants and a post office, Holden Beach is still an idyllic place to spend a week or have the wedding of your dreams.
Oak Island, the easternmost Brunswick County Islands, is famous for its live oak trees and the Oak Island Lighthouse, which was deeded to the town along with five acres of waterfront by the Coast Guard several years ago. Like Holden Beach, Oak Island has little commercial development, with most properties being beach homes. Oak Island is connected to the mainland with a modern bridge; a second bridge to the island is under development. Oak Island is the largest of the Brunswick County Islands, and has the most restaurants, shops, and boasts three fishing piers.
Ocean Isle sits southwest of Holden Beach, and has considerably more commercial development on the island than the other Brunswick County Islands. Ocean Isle has a large network of canals that are ringed with lovely beach homes. A large, private condominium and beach club development exists on the western end of the island. Ocean Isle has a large marsh that separates it from the mainland; the intracoastal waterway between Ocean Isle and the mainland is very wide and is frequented by both fisherman and shore birds.
Sunset Beach is the southernmost of the Brunswick County Islands, and the smallest. Sunset is ideally located close to north Myrtle Beach, great for shopping and day trips. Currently, the outdated drawbridge which connects Sunset Beach to the mainland is being replaced with a modern bridge. Several good restaurants exist on the causeway leading to the island.
Our soft, Atlantic beach is pristine, except for thousands of shells that dot the coastline. Even in the height of summer the beach is not crowded. When you sit on any of the Brunswick County Islands, you are facing south, as the sun crosses the island parallel to the beach. During your wedding, neither you nor your guests will have to stare into the sun. At low tide there are vast expanses of beach to accommodate you and your party comfortably. The beach access points are elevated walkways. The Towns of Holden Beach, Oak Island, Ocean Isle and Sunset Beach are wedding friendly!
